MEET CAPTAIN DUDLEY

​

Born and raised in Leelanau County, Dudley grew up just south of Leland in the heart of Good Harbor Bay. From an early age, he was immersed in the rivers, woods, and wild waters of northern Michigan—chasing fish after school, hunting with friends, and learning the rhythms of nature that would shape his lifelong passion.

Dudley has spent decades guiding unforgettable fishing experiences, earning the trust of serious anglers, top pro golfers, and other professional athletes who return year after year for his expertise and storytelling. Lake Michigan isn’t just familiar water—it’s home. It’s water Dudley knows like the back of his hand.

 

After graduating from The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor, Dudley followed his adventurous spirit west to the University of Utah. There, he turned his passions into a lifestyle—spending spring through fall as a professional fly fishing guide, and winters guiding backcountry skiing and snowmobiling tours through the high alpine wilderness.

 

Dudley’s western chapter included owning a fly fishing outfitter on the legendary Green River in Utah, where he rowed a drift boat daily through one of North America’s most iconic tailwaters. Along the way, he helped design fly fishing gear and apparel and became a trusted pro-staff member for some of the most respected brands in the industry.

 

After 30 years out west, Dudley has returned to his roots—and more importantly, his home waters. His long-standing relationship with Hawkins Outfitters has now become official, though he’s been guiding their clients for years on hosted trips out west. Today, he brings that same passion, deep expertise, and love of teaching to the rivers and lakes of northern Michigan.

 

With over 25 years of professional guiding experience, Dudley is committed to delivering a memorable, educational, and wildly fun day on the water—whether you’re chasing trout in a hidden stream or salmon on the big lake.

 

When he’s not guiding, you’ll find Dudley with family, dogs, and friends—almost always outdoors and often on the water. His other passions include cycling, skiing, photography, motors of all kinds, and chasing fish anywhere in the world that eat a fly.
